AHMED GHULAM KALLON: Commissioner - Eastern Region

 

Mr. Ahmed Ghulam Kallon is the Commissioner of the Right to Access Information Commission – Eastern Region. Ahmed G. Kallon was appointed by HE President Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio on 15th. August, 2022, subject to parliamentary approval which finally took place on 18th. October, 2022 in the well of Parliament. 

On Friday 28th. October, 2022, Kallon took over the office from his predecessor, Commissioner Mary Wuyatta Karim who resigned her position in April 2022 for personal development reasons.

He is a multi- media expert of over thirty years uninterrupted service with both the state radio and television – the then Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) for thirteen years – 1992- 2005, and the eastern regional community radio – the Eastern Community Radio FM 101.9 Kenema, 96.5 Kono and 89.9 Kailahun (Daru) for eighteen years now.

While at the state radio and Television - the then Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS), now the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation, Kallon served in various capacities ranging from Cameraman, Electronic editor, Producer of Cultural Heritage programs on both radio and Television, Newsreader and producer of current affairs programs in Mende language.

It was due to his multifunctional services that he was nominated as the sole personnel from the electronic media to cover the Lome Peace Accord in Togo in the year 2000, since he was the only

 personnel at that time, that could handle the TV camera well as well as report news professionally.

Till his appointment as Commissioner for the Right to Access Information Commission – Eastern Region, Ahmed G. Kallon had served as the founding Station Manager for the enviable award-winning community radio for seventeen years during which period he established branches in the two regional sister districts of Kono and Kailahun districts, and was promoted to the position of General Station Manager for the three-sister radio family.

With all his experience and other academic pursuits, Commissioner Ahmed G. Kallon decided in 2010 to pursue a professional course in journalism but was limited by his Board of Advisors’ decision to grant him permission for only two years ending in 2012 which the board considered crucial to allow him stay away from the radio.

Ahmed G. Kallon therefore went in for a Diploma in Mass Communications at the Fourah Bay College - University of Sierra Leone, just to back up his experience in the media with a professional qualification document and came out with a distinction in Mass Communications in 2012.

He has served in three successful regional positions in the eastern region of Sierra Leone thereby positioning him as a regional character: Kallon has served as the regional manager of the regional radio- the Eastern Community Radio for seventeen years in 2022, Regional Coordinator of the Independent Radio Network (IRN) for over ten years, as Regional Executive Officer of the COVID -19 office in the east and now as the Regional Commissioner – East, Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC).
